And Then She Was Twelve

With each year that passes, Leah gets more and more excited in the weeks leading up to her birthday. This year, with little else to occupy her thoughts, Leah has been obsessing about her birthday for months. What will we eat? What kind of cake? What about presents?

It’s been the longest period of birthday anticipation ever and I think it’s exhausted everyone. (I know I’m ready for a slice of cake and then a nap at this point.)

But it’s finally here and I’m so thrilled with the person Leah is growing into. She continues to exercise perseverance in spades and her sense of compassion for others is second to none. And as Leah keeps reminding me, this is her last year of being a kid… so she plans on packing lots of childlike fun into the next 365 days.

Our low-key birthday plans involve sushi for lunch, cake for dinner, Lego building, and rides around the neighbourhood on Leah’s new scooter. This feels like exactly the right tone to strike for today’s celebration: Leah gets to choose her favourite meal and cake, but we have nothing in the way of concrete plans in case we have to pivot at the last moment.

Since I love observing how Leah’s tastes change from year to year, here are some of her current favourites.

Favourite Colour: Purple

Favourite Breakfast: Waffles

Favourite Dinner: Cake (she’s my kind of girl — why waste valuable stomach real estate on a main course when you could fill that space with dessert?)

Favourite Dessert: Peach Cobbler

Favourite Movie: Inside Out

Favourite Book: Any of the Judy Moody books

Favourite Thing to Do with Mum: Play Crazy Eights Countdown because I almost always win

Favourite Thing to Do with Dad: Play basketball

Favourite Thing to Do with Adam: Play Pokémon Go

Favourite Place to Visit: Great Wolf Lodge if it ever opens again

Favourite Song: Let It Go

Future Plans: Learn skateboard tricks, do some crafty stuff, and sleep

If today is any indication, TWELVE is going to be amazing for Leah. Happy Birthday, my tricksy pixie.
